A LeafySIM Dominican Republic eSIM runs on Altice, which covers Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and Samaná, and carries 5G in Santo Domingo and La Romana. You install it from a QR code before you fly and your data starts working when you land. Plans run from 1GB to 20GB, and you can top up mid-trip without swapping anything.
Where your Dominican Republic eSIM actually works
Your plan connects to Altice. Published 2026 comparisons put Altice at about 95% of the country's tourist zones, behind Claro's 98% and ahead of Viva's 85%, and Altice switched on 5G in Santo Domingo and La Romana in April 2026.
Here is the honest version. Altice is strong in the cities and the main tourist hubs and it is the thinner of the two once you leave the main routes. If you are driving secondary roads inland around Jarabacoa and Constanza, or down the southwest coast toward Pedernales, Claro has the edge there and you should know that before you buy rather than after.
In practice that covers Punta Cana and Bávaro, Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, Cabarete and the Samaná peninsula without you thinking about it. The thin stretches are inland mountain roads around Jarabacoa and Constanza, and the southwest coast down toward Pedernales. If your trip is a resort plus day trips, you are covered the whole way.
WhatsApp is how this country runs, and it is the real reason to have data
Drivers, tour operators, Airbnb hosts and resort transfer companies here coordinate over WhatsApp instead of phone calls. Your airport pickup messages you where to meet. The catamaran trip out of Bayahibe confirms the night before. The colmado down the road takes orders on it.
That is why hotel wifi is not enough in the Dominican Republic specifically. The moment you walk out of the lobby you stop receiving the messages that make the day work, and you find out at the worst possible time, standing outside arrivals at Punta Cana looking for a driver you cannot reach.
How much data you need in the Dominican Republic
Most people buy too much. A week of maps, WhatsApp, ride-hailing and normal scrolling lands around 3GB to 5GB, which is the 3GB plan at $17.49 or the 5GB at $24.99. Go to 10GB at $45.49 if you are working from the beach, video calling home every night, or streaming away from resort wifi. The 1GB plan at $6.99 is built for a weekend or a cruise stop where you only need maps and messages.
Every plan runs a 30 day window except the 1GB, which runs 7 days. If you run out, you top up instead of buying again.
What this plan does not do
It is data only. You do not get a Dominican phone number, you cannot make regular calls, and you will not receive SMS on it. Everything that travels over data still works, so WhatsApp calls, iMessage and FaceTime are all fine. If your bank texts you a login code it goes to your normal number, so leave your home SIM switched on for texts with its data turned off.
We also do not sell an unlimited Dominican Republic plan. Most unlimited travel eSIMs mean a full speed allowance each day and a hard throttle once you pass it, so the honest version is to pick the size that matches your trip and top up if you run out.
What it costs next to roaming
Verizon's TravelPass and AT&T's International Day Pass both run $12 a day, so a seven day trip is $84 before you have used a single megabyte. The cheapest route a US carrier actually gives you is T-Mobile's 10 day International Pass at $50 for 15GB. The 5GB Dominican Republic plan is $24.99 and covers the same week for most travelers.
Setting up your Dominican Republic eSIM before you fly
Buy it now and install it on wifi at home. The QR code arrives by email, you scan it in your phone settings, and you leave the line switched off until you land. The plan holds a 180 day activation window, so buying early costs you nothing.
When you land, switch the line on and turn data roaming off on your home SIM. That is the whole setup.
The networks you'll ride
Your eSIM connects to the destination's real carriers and picks the strongest signal automatically. We publish this because most resellers won't.
Will your phone work? You need a carrier-unlocked phone that supports eSIM, including: iPhone XS, XR and newer , Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer , Google Pixel 3 and newer .
FAQ
Good to know before you fly
When does the clock start?
When your eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it and not when you install it. Install it before you fly, on your home WiFi; the plan starts when you land.
Can I top up if I run out?
Yes, on most plans, any time before it expires. Buy a top-up from your order page and it applies to the eSIM you already installed, no reinstalling required.
Is there a phone number included?
No, this is a data-only eSIM. Your own number stays active on your home SIM for calls and texts, and apps like WhatsApp and FaceTime work over data as usual.
When should I install it?
Before you fly, on your home WiFi. Every plan has a 180-day window to activate, and the clock does not start until you actually connect at your destination.
