A LeafySIM Japan eSIM can use all four Japanese networks, NTT docomo, KDDI au, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile, on 5G where it is available. Install it from a QR code before you fly and it works when you land at Narita, Haneda or Kansai. Plans run 1GB to 50GB, from $3.49.

Where your Japan eSIM actually works

This is the unusual one. Most Japan plans sit on a single carrier. Yours can use all four, and the practical effect shows up outside the cities.

Opensignal's April 2026 testing puts docomo ahead on coverage, SoftBank ahead on download speed and au strongest on consistency. Docomo is the one that reaches the Japanese Alps, the Hokkaido backcountry and the smaller islands, which is exactly where a single-carrier plan lets you down. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima and the Shinkansen corridor between them are comfortable on any of the four.

Japan is the country where being offline costs you the most

Japan looks easy until you are underground. Tokyo station has more than twenty platforms, the transfer you need is signposted in kanji, and the app that tells you which car to board so you exit next to the right staircase only works with data.

Then there is the rest of it. IC card top-ups, restaurant queue apps, the Google Translate camera on a handwritten izakaya menu, and the fact that much of Japan still runs on cash so you are hunting for a 7-Eleven ATM at some point. None of that is hard with data. All of it is friction without it.

How much data you need in Japan

A two week trip on maps, transit apps, translation and photos runs about 5GB, which is $8.99. The 3GB at $6.49 covers a week. Go to 10GB at $14.49 if you are posting video daily or working as you travel. The 50GB at $79.99 runs a 180 day window and suits a long stay. The 1GB at $3.49 is a 7 day layover plan.

What this plan does not do

Data only. No Japanese phone number, no regular calls, no SMS. That is worth a thought here, because a few Japanese restaurants and ryokan still take bookings only by phone, and some booking sites want a Japanese number in the form. Reservation apps and hotel email work fine on data. Keep your home SIM on for bank codes with its data off.

What it costs next to roaming

Verizon's TravelPass and AT&T's International Day Pass both run $12 a day, so two weeks in Japan is $168 before you use anything. The cheapest route a US carrier gives you is T-Mobile's 10 day International Pass at $50 for 15GB. The 5GB Japan plan is $8.99.

Setting up your Japan eSIM before you fly

Buy it now and install on wifi at home. The QR code arrives by email, you scan it in your phone settings, and you leave the line off until you land. The plan holds a 180 day activation window. On landing, switch the line on and turn data roaming off on your home SIM.

The networks you'll ride

Your eSIM connects to the destination's real carriers and picks the strongest signal automatically. We publish this because most resellers won't.

FAQ

Good to know before you fly

When does the clock start?

When your eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it and not when you install it. Install it before you fly, on your home WiFi; the plan starts when you land.

Can I top up if I run out?

Yes, on most plans, any time before it expires. Buy a top-up from your order page and it applies to the eSIM you already installed, no reinstalling required.

Is there a phone number included?

No, this is a data-only eSIM. Your own number stays active on your home SIM for calls and texts, and apps like WhatsApp and FaceTime work over data as usual.

When should I install it?

Before you fly, on your home WiFi. Every plan has a 180-day window to activate, and the clock does not start until you actually connect at your destination.
