A LeafySIM Sri Lanka eSIM runs on Hutch and covers Colombo, Negombo, Galle and the south coast. You install it from a QR code before you fly, so you skip the passport registration queue the airport SIM counters require. Plans run 1GB to 20GB, and you can top up without swapping anything.
Where your Sri Lanka eSIM actually works
Your plan connects to Hutch's 4G network. Hutch is the smaller of Sri Lanka's operators and it is built around the cities and the main tourist routes, so Colombo, Negombo, Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa and the south coast run are comfortable.
The honest part, and it decides whether this is the right plan for your trip. Dialog and Mobitel carry the wider coverage on this island, at roughly 92% and 91.5% network availability, and Hutch did not bid for 5G spectrum at all. Where Hutch thins out is the hill country and the national parks, so Ella, Nuwara Eliya, the Horton Plains, Yala and Udawalawe are where to expect gaps. If your trip is mostly up in the hills or on safari, buy a Dialog or Mobitel SIM at the airport instead and accept the passport queue.
Two places it gets patchy, and both are places you are likely to go. The hill country line between Kandy and Ella climbs through tunnels and valleys where signal comes and goes, so download your tickets and offline maps before you set off. And in the national parks, Yala, Udawalawe and Wilpattu, you will have usable signal at the entrances and at the lodges but not deep inside on a game drive. That is the network, not the plan, and it is the same for a local SIM.
You skip the passport queue, and that is worth more than the money
A local tourist SIM in Sri Lanka has to be registered against your passport at the counter. That means landing at Bandaranaike after a long flight, finding the Dialog or Mobitel desk in arrivals, queueing, handing over your passport and waiting while it is entered.
An eSIM has none of that. You install it at home on wifi, it is already on your phone when you land, and you walk straight past the counter to your driver. For the person who deliberately does not over-plan a trip, this is the whole point: one thing sorted in advance so nothing else has to be.
The other thing data buys you here is the tuk tuk. PickMe is Sri Lanka's ride app and it is the difference between a metered fare and a tourist price negotiated on the roadside. It needs data to work.
How much data you need in Sri Lanka
A two week trip on maps, PickMe, WhatsApp and normal photo uploading runs about 5GB, which is $14.49 on the 30 day window. The 3GB at $9.99 covers a shorter first visit. Go to 10GB at $23.49 if you are uploading video from the south coast or working while you travel. The 1GB at $4.49 runs 7 days and suits a stopover.
What this plan does not do
It is data only. No Sri Lankan number, no regular calls, no SMS. WhatsApp is how guesthouses and drivers here communicate and it runs on data, so that is covered. Keep your home SIM switched on for bank codes with its data off.
What it costs next to roaming
Verizon's TravelPass and AT&T's International Day Pass both run $12 a day, so a two week trip is $168 before you use a megabyte. The cheapest route a US carrier gives you is T-Mobile's 10 day International Pass at $50 for 15GB. The 5GB Sri Lanka plan is $14.49 and covers the same two weeks for most travelers.
Setting up your Sri Lanka eSIM before you fly
Buy it now and install on wifi at home. The QR code arrives by email, you scan it in your phone settings, and you leave the line off until you land at Colombo. The plan holds a 180 day activation window. When you land, switch the line on and turn data roaming off on your home SIM.
The networks you'll ride
Your eSIM connects to the destination's real carriers and picks the strongest signal automatically. We publish this because most resellers won't.
Will your phone work? You need a carrier-unlocked phone that supports eSIM, including: iPhone XS, XR and newer , Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer , Google Pixel 3 and newer .
FAQ
Good to know before you fly
When does the clock start?
When your eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it and not when you install it. Install it before you fly, on your home WiFi; the plan starts when you land.
Can I top up if I run out?
Yes, on most plans, any time before it expires. Buy a top-up from your order page and it applies to the eSIM you already installed, no reinstalling required.
Is there a phone number included?
No, this is a data-only eSIM. Your own number stays active on your home SIM for calls and texts, and apps like WhatsApp and FaceTime work over data as usual.
When should I install it?
Before you fly, on your home WiFi. Every plan has a 180-day window to activate, and the clock does not start until you actually connect at your destination.
